Overview

Cities in foreign countries that have introduced green infrastructure are attracting attention for combining resilience and charm, and are highly regarded worldwide.

"Green Infrastructure" is an idea that promotes measures beneficial to the natural environment, economy, and society as part of social capital development, by effective land use, taking into account the ecosystem and natural disasters, and the functions of disaster prevention and water purification in the natural environment as an alternative or supplement to artificial social capital.

The Pacific coast of Kyushu is also expected to be affected by the tsunami caused by the Nankai Megathrust Earthquake. We are studying tsunami disaster prevention methods that are based on the concept of green infrastructure.

We will research the introduction and effects of green infrastructure in Kumamoto City, which is aiming to recover from the Kumamoto earthquake.

Overview

"Eco-DRR (Disaster Risk Reduction Using Ecosystems)" is a concept that takes into account regional characteristics while implementing disaster prevention and mitigation measures, involves the participation of various stakeholders including local residents, avoids development and use of land vulnerable to natural disasters and avoids exposing it to disasters, uses diverse functions of the ecosystem—such as disaster prevention and mitigation—to reduce the vulnerabilities of society, strengthens disaster prevention and mitigation in local communities, ensures biodiversity and ecosystem services, and tries to build a sustainable, safe and rich natural symbiotic society.

We are researching and analyzing areas affected by the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake to assess this possibility.
